Maple Leaf Preschool

Barb Gould, MS

Director, Maple Leaf Preschool

I am so grateful to love the work that I do.  I don't just say that lightly, I really mean it.  Twenty-seven years ago I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in elementary education and an area of concentration in music.   I taught kindergarten, first, and second grade over the following 13 years.  During that time I also discovered I had a passion for teaching young children how to read and write and went back to school and earned a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a special emphasis on young children and early literacy acquisition.  My husband and I started our family and 3 children later, I focused my attention on raising our children. I also tutored elementary aged children in reading and math out of our home during this time.

As my children grew older I took my love of music and began teaching flute and piano out of my home studio.  When my youngest child began first grade I realized how much I loved the preschool years, so, in addition to my music studio, my journey as a preschool teacher began.  In 2005 I started running classes for preschoolers at a local arts academy.  In 2011 I had the opportunity to open my own preschool and Maple Leaf Academy was born.

Throughout my journey as an educator I have had the privilege of working with hundreds of children and their families.  I have learned through all these different experiences how unique and different each child is and what gifts they all are.  I have also realized that I am passionate about teaching and making a difference in the lives of children and their families.  A child learns more during their first five years than during any other time in their life.  I want to offer each child a great beginning, a place where they can thrive, learn, be themselves, sing, imagine, play, create, work, listen, talk, and grow.  I also want this environment to be educationally sound and based on the best of the latest research in early childhood education.    I want to help each child discover their potential and celebrate their uniqueness!
